How to configure current SQL high availability cluster using mirroring with dedicated replication NICS?

$

We have a current HA cluster at center1 which is mirrored to another HA cluster in center2.   We have several instances already installed and working which are using one NIC for data and replication.  We want to prevent mirror failovers by configuring a NIC on a replication network which has no DNS server.   What are the steps to configure the current SQL instances to use this dedicated NIC for mirror replication?

Is it supported configuration to separate File Witness Server and Windows 2012 R2 Cluster nodes in Dynamic Quorum by NAT/PAT/Firewall in internal network?

Thanks in advance.

Hello all,

We have following setup,

2 servers of windows server 2012 standard...they are in failover clustering

SQL server 2012 is also there.

The customer has asked us to change hostname of servers.so we changed the hostname of servers and now we r unable to see disk(SAN),unable to connect CLUSTER ,unable to add  theses nodes in cluster and as no disk in computer management no SQL server database.

Please suggest what to do??

HOw to change hostname of servers without affecting failover clustering.

File Share Witness Resouces Errors in a SQL 2012 Alwayson Availability Group Environment

Hi I am getting the following error in WFC Manager and in my system event log:

Event ID1564:

File share witness resource 'File Share Witness' failed to arbitrate for the file share '\\SQL2012ClusterWitnessPath'. Please ensure that file share '\\SQL2012ClusterWitnessPath' exists and is accessible by the cluster.

Event ID 1069:

Cluster resource 'File Share Witness' of type 'File Share Witness' in clustered role 'Cluster Group' failed.

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

Event ID 1205:

The Cluster service failed to bring clustered service or application 'Cluster Group' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service or application.

These errors showed up every hour on the hour and then suddenly stopped.  I tried looking at the cluster.log file but there wasn't anything recorded there.  The file share witness shows to be online and my AG did not fail over to another node.  The cluster has read and write permissions to the share.  I did not find any error messages about the witness share on the remote server.

I am wondering what caused these series of events to occur?

Thanks.

Windows Server 2012 Cluster Failover Team issue

Hi Guys,

We are running a cross site same subnet cluster within Windows Server 2012. We had a switch failure which caused the team to fail over to the standby teamed NIC. Pings were successful to all servers, but after 5 seconds the servers were removed from the failover cluster memebership and the . This is completely reproducible and you can even disable the NIC on one server it is removed form the cluster membership. After 1 minute the cluster service restarts and everything is fine even on the backup NIC. Does anyone have any recommendations for this? I upped the timeout to 40 seconds and still had the issue.

Thanks for any help on this.

Cannot add cluster disk on windows 2012

I have 2 servers connected to a shared storage array using Fibre Channel.  Currently there are 2 luns on the storage device.

From the Failover Cluster Manager, when I select “Add Disk” from Storage – Disks, both luns show up and I can add them without problems.  But if I choose to only add one of them first (it doesn't make a difference which one is added first), then it will not allow adding the second one later.  I get a message: "No disks suitable for cluster disks were found. For diagnostic information about disks available to the cluster, use Validate a Configuration Wizard to run Storage tests."

When I do add one (or both disks at the same time), they work just fine for failover clustering.

I can’t imagine this is by design. Is this a known/unknown issue, or is there something special that needs to be done?

Thanks

WMI Permissions on Cluster Name

$

We have recently implemented SCOM 2012 with the SQL Management Pack.  On our SQL Clusters (SQL 2008), we have added a low level privilege account to the local administrators group on both nodes and have given read permissions to the databases in SQL (as recommended by Microsoft).   The servers are Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

The issue is, we were receiving a script error on a getSQL2008DBFilesFreeSpace.vbs that the script was terminated because it was running over the 300 second timeout.   Upon further investigation, we have found the real issue.

The low-level privilege account did not have the ability to browse WMI using the Cluster Name.   We were receiving an access denied.   If you logged in as the low-level privilege account locally on one of the SQL Cluster nodes and run wbemtest and then connected to \\<clustername>\root\cimv2, we received an access denied error.   If you connect to \\<clusternodename>\root\cimv2, it would connect successfully.

The low level privilege account is a local administrator of the server and is in the local administrators group.  If you look a the WMI permissions, the local administrators group has full permissions on both the node name and the SQL Cluster name.

To resolve this issue, we had to edit DCOM permissions for the "My Computer" object for Launch and Activation Permissions/Edit Limits and then add the low level priviledge account explicitly with Remote Activation permissions.

My question.....why do you have to add EXPLICIT permissions for an account in DCOM when the account is already a member of local administrators group that HAS the remote activation permission defined????

I appreciate it if any one can tell me if there is a patch or something that I am missing that corrects this condition.  I think it is silly that I have to add this account explicitly if it is already a member of a group that has the permissions defined?

Thanks!

ODX in Windows Server 2012

Hi Colleagues,

I have doubt about ODX in Server 2012 Failover clustering.

I am about to deploy 2 clusters for hosting content management system, and in the storage design plan I am thinking of using ODX on server 2012. So I would like you to provide your suggestions.

  • Can we have this storage technology only on hyper-v clusters or it can be used for normal failover cluster hosting DB's ?
  • Has anyone used this technology, how reliable is it and your success stories :)
  • Could you tell me about cons on using this technology ?

Many Thanks,

Migrate SOFS Role between 2012 R2 Clusters

$

I have a sofs role configured on a 2012R2 3 node cluster, and I need it moved to a different cluster so that the nodes on the current cluster can be rebuilt. Both clusters use a CSV. The share that is used by the sofs sits on a CSV (connected by iscsi on each node)

Im trying to understand the advice here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn659431.aspx

Method 1 is confusing because it discusses migrating virtual machine storage with VMM but I dont see how this relates to a SOFS.

Method 2 seems most applicable, however when I use the 'Copy Cluster Roles Wizard, and I select the source cluster, it brings up a list of role available to be migrated, and I cannot select the single SOFS I want to move. If I check one box, it automatically checks the box for every role on the cluster, and I dont want to move everything.

Also, im confused about the process of the migration and what exactly migrates once I get past the first issue above.

Should I be running this wizard to migrate the role to the new cluster, then connecting the iscsi for the lun to the 3 destination nodes and mounting as a csv ? and then disconnecting the csv from the source cluster ? or vice versa ? or?

cant find a good guide for this. Any advice or pointers in the right direction much appreciated.

tks

File Server role, changing settings on shares throws an error

$

Using Windows 2012R2 with Failover Cluster Manager, I am attempting to set up a File Server role.  In doing so, I have been able to get the computer account created and bring the role online.  From there, click the "Shares" tab at the bottom of the Failover Cluster Manager, then right click any share listed and choose "Properties".  A new window appears with three tabs on the left labeled "General", "Permissions", and "Settings".  I click"Settings" and am presented with the following checkboxes:

  • Enable access-based enumeration
  • Enable continuous availability
  • Allow caching of share (checked by default)
  • Encrypt data access

At this point if I check or uncheck any options, when I apply them a red banner across the top gives me the message:

"The specific object cannot be updated either because the server is not available or because the required service is not present on the server."

I then moved the role to the other node and tried this again.  This time, I got a different error:

"Error occurred while updating an SMB share: The requested operation is not supported. The requested operation is not supported."(yes, it is repeated twice)

The event viewer doesn't have any entries.  I searched online for this error message, but it turned up nothing.  Any ideas what might be going on?

Server 2003 Cluster service will not start

I have a server 2003 2-node cluster that runs an Oracle Database. One of the nodes got an McAfee update and was rebooted. Node A will not start the cluster service after the update but Node B does not have any issues in the cluster.

The Cluster log shows issues with not able to access Node B showing Network adapter issues. When I open cluster admin all the network connections show an exclamation point.

I have done the following:

Verified all dependent services have started

Reinstalled the network drivers and rebooted.

I have also ran net stat cluster service /fq

Thanks

CAU - Cluster Aware Updating Computer Object

$

Hello,

recently I installed 2 Windows Server 2012 R2 Failover Clusters.
I prestaged the CAU Computer Objects.

After configuring the Role on the first Cluster, I went to the second and specified the wrong computer object for the CAU Role.

Basically I gave the second Cluster the same computer object than the first.
This resulted in a failure, so I removed the CAU Role and installed it again with the correct Computer Object.

However, for some reason it is still referencing to the wrong computer object, therefore CAU cannot run.

Do you know how to clean the information in the cluster re. CAU?

Thanks,
Jens

The lease timeout between avaiability group and the Windows Server Failover Cluster has expired

$

Hi,

I am having some issues where I get a lease timeout from time to time.  I have a Windows 2012 Failover Cluster with 2 nodes and 2 SQL 2012 Always-on Availability Groups.  Both nodes are a physical machines and each node is the primary for an AG.

From what I understand ifthe HealhCheckTimeoutis exceeded without the signal exchange the lease is declared 'expired' and the SQL Server resource dll reports that the SQL Server availability group no longer 'looks alive' to the Windows cluster manager.  Here are the properties I have setup which are the default settings:

LeaseTimeout - 20000

HealthCheckTimeout - 30000

VerboseLoging - 0>

FailureConditionLevel – 3

Here are the events that occur in the Application Event Viewer:

Event ID 19407:

The lease between availability group 'AG_NAME' and the Windows Server Failover Cluster has expired. A connectivity issue occurred between the instance of SQL Server and the Windows Server Failover Cluster. To determine whether the availability group is failing over correctly, check the corresponding availability group resource in the Windows Server Failover Cluster.

Event ID 35285:

The recovery LSN (120881:37533:1) was identified for the database with ID 32. This is an informational message only. No user action is required.

SQl server logs are too long to post in this box but I can send them if you request.

The AG is setup to failover automatically but it did not failover.  I am trying to figure out why the lease timed out.  Thanks.

Hi,

I need a clarification on OEM & Volume Licenses as below.

Can I migrate 32 bit version to 64 bit version ??

If yes then what will be the process?? Do I need to by 64 license or existing 32bit license is suffice??

If existing OEM/Volume license is sufficient then which product key I have to use??

It would be great if anyone from Microsoft can answer immediately pls.

Hi

I create in my lab, 3 serveurs Windows 2012 R2, all servers in a cluster.

I check to create a share for FSW (File Share Witness), what is a best practices ?

1 - Create a share on CIFS?

2- Create a share on another server Windows 2012 R2?

3- Create another cluster for a share?

Do you have a link explains a best practice, because later, i create name cluster?

With a many cluster,  the best way is it better to group all shares ? or split on many server?

Thanks

Failover Cluster - GHOST VMS / ROLES

$

I mean Ghost as in mysterious non-existent machine, not the old Norton program.  I've periodically had random cluster crashes, mainly due to my own negligence.  99% of the time everything comes back up normally.  However periodically a machine will have very strange symptoms that i'm unable to resolve.  The only resolution I've found is to create a new VM and link to the the old VHD.  A description of the machines with this issue:

  1. Shown in Failover Cluster role as Running but cannot Connect, turn off, shutdown, etc.
  2. Login to Host machine for the VM and open Hyper-V Manager the machine does not exist.  The only place this machine seems to exist is in Failover cluster.
  3. No details available on the Summary Tab, machine doesn't actually appear to be running despite what the console says.
  4. Under the resources tab for that Machine is shows the VM as running, but the VM Configuration as failed.
  5. Unable to bring the configuration back online.  Error is "The group or resource is not the correct state to perform the requested operation"

I've seen other vague areas about null context pointers or something alone those lines.  I've tried researching the users methods to no avail.  How can I fix these? Or at least remove them when i've recreated the machine.

Failover Cluster disk failed on a VM.

Hello,

I tried to create a Failover cluster node on a VM (with a virtual disk with fixed size).

All the step are ok except disk storage Add.

When I try to Add a disk, the following error appears :

Status : Failed.

Information : Incorrect function.

Error Code : 0X80070001.

Does anyone know if it's possible to add a V-disk Hyper-V on a cluster node ?

Thanks,

hi ,

i just created 2 iscsi disk for quorum disk and shared disk.

1. The moment i created cluster the quorum was automatically choosen, is that correct behaviour. Cause i didt do it by myself ?

2. Also the ISCSI shared disk which was my [E: Drive] moved to [C/ClusterStorage/Volume1]  is it correct ?

How to upgrade a windows 2008 R2 HyperV Cluster

$

I have a 4 node Hyper-V cluster running Windows 2008 R2. All the 4 nodes in the cluster are connected to an FC SAN where the VM's are stored. We are not using CSV but dedicated LUN for each VM.

I want to upgrade this to Windows 2012 R2. I do not have any extra servers, I just have to upgrade the existing servers to end up after the upgrade with a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster using the same hardware.

Can this be done and what steps need to be followed? Would be grateful for any help.
