Random Reboots

Hello, I am experiencing random reboots on random servers during the week at random time... I did some research and I am suspecting that the "automatic recovery for application health monitoring" is what causes that but I am not sure... Can any expert make a suggestion? I am attaching a copy of the log that is being generated during the shutdown...

Error when adding a disk to Cluster Shared Volumes

When adding a disk to Cluster Shared Volumes via Failover Cluster Manager, I get a couple of errors.

Event ID 5145 in System Log:

While adding the disk ('Cluster Disk 1') to Cluster Shared Volumes, setting explicit snapshot diff area association for volume ('\\?\Volume{420e2cc4-4fb4-41be-afb1-65f2ee62457a}\') failed with error 'HrError(0x8004230d)'. The only supported software snapshot diff area association for Cluster Shared Volumes is to self.

Cluster disk resource 'Cluster Disk 1' failed to delete a software snapshot.  The diff area on volume '\\?\Volume{420e2cc4-4fb4-41be-afb1-65f2ee62457a}\' could not be dissociated from volume '\\?\Volume{420e2cc4-4fb4-41be-afb1-65f2ee62457a}\'. This may be caused by active snapshots. Cluster Shared Volumes requires that the software snapshot be located on the same disk.

Any ideas why I'm getting this error?  This disk was previously added as a CSV to different Windows failover cluster, if that matters.  Thanks.

"Optimize" a CSV volume

I have a H-V 2012 cluster with 3 nodes.  I use a CSV volume to store the VMs.  I have all the latest patches installed. I have an Equallogic SAN (PS4000) with the latest firmware on it providing the LUN for the CSV.  Everything in my environment is supposed to support re-thinning (or unmapping, or whatever the right term is) the LUN.  I have about 500 GB of unused space on the 2TB volume, and the volume was thin provisioned.  A restore of some very large vhd files from backup caused the thin provisioned volume to grow and to use almost the entire volume at one point but the corrupt VHDs have since been deleted.  Now I have "dirty" blocks in the LUN that I want to reclaim into free space on the SAN. This all happens, apparently, when Server 2012 performs an "Optimize" on the disks.  In my environment this is scheduled to happen once a week.  It did apparently do something this last week, because my volume utilization on the SAN went from 96% to 91%.  Not even close to reclaiming all dirty blocks, but it's a start I guess.  So now I went in to the "Defragment and Optimize Drives" utility and told it to commence a manual optimization.  Nothing happens and event viewer give me this error:

The volume VMStorage1 (C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1) was not optimized because an error was encountered: CSVFS failed operation as volume is not in redirected mode. (0x8007174F)

So my questions are these:

Shouldn't it put the CSV in redirect mode if it needs to do this in order to optimize the drive automatically?

If it can't do this automatically, how did it return 5% of the CSV SAN volume to free space last week?

Can I put the volume in redirect mode manually and do the optimize manually? Redirect mode is not supposed to be necessary in 2012 CSV any more- at least not for backup.  Why here?

Will my environment re-thin, Unmap, whatever?  It appears it MIGHT.  Does it take several iterations (ie weeks)?

Can anyone explain this incredibly vague and cloaked process from a Windows server 2012 perspective?

Thank you for any help!

Add-VMHardDiskDrive anomaly

I am building a PowerShell script to build out a SQL cluster comprised of VMs.  I have a 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster with shared FC.  Everything is working fine on it.  But I ran into a strange occurrence with the Add-VMHardDiskDrive cmdlet.  It appears that it only works 'cleanly' on the node that owns the cluster name.  Here is a screen shot.

The first time I issued the command, the cluster name was owned by a different node in the Hyper-V cluster.  The second time I issued the command, the cluster name was owned by the same node on which I was executing the command.  That's the only difference.

The other interesting thing about this is that even though I am receiving the warning and error, the VHDX file is properly added to the VM.  So before I changed the ownership of the cluster group, I removed the VHDX file from the VM so that it would start at the same place on the VM.

I am running this from a Windows 8.1 VM that has all the latest patches and RSAT tools.  The 2012 R2 cluster nodes are all up to date on published patches.  The VMs are all 2012 R2 VMs.

Is this expected behavior?

VMs Fail Randomly on 2012 Cluster

Our 2-node Server 2012 Hyper-V cluster is having an issue where VMs seem to randomly fail for no apparent reason.  We are using Dell R900s with a MD3200i SAN and we have separate networks for iSCSI and Heartbeat.  On one of the nodes we get an error 1069 "Cluster Resource 'Virtual Machine VM200X32' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role 'VM200X32' failed."  Below I have listed the relevant cluster log events from around the time it fails.  The cluster has passed validation and is running 50+ test VMs just fine, it's only a few of them that seem to be having this issue.

Just wondering if anyone else might have some input on what the problem could be.

Hello

I have 2 Hosts , HP Proliant DL580 G7 with Server windows server 2012 Installed and updated with the last windows updates and drivers and hardware firmware. And the Hyper-v Role installed.

With FC SAN storage connected.

Each server have 6 NICs and only 2 NICs in each server are connected and the NIC Team is enabled for with 2 NICs.

I installed the Windows Failover Cluster Feature and the validation process passed with no failed results.

I have one 2012 domain controller running 2008 R2 AD Functional Level.

but when i start creating the cluster it stops with the following errors:

Creating a new computer account (object) for 'HVC' in the
domain.
Unable to successfully cleanup.
An error occurred while creating the cluster and the nodes will
be cleaned up. Please wait...

To troubleshoot cluster creation problems, run the Validate a
Configuration wizard on the servers you want to cluster.

i enabled the diagnostic log on the failover cluster Client in the event log and i got the following errors:

OpenClusterImpl (1119): Could not connect to cluster. sc = 1753
ConnectCluster (979): Connect to Local Cluster: ApiGetClusterName failed, sc = 1753.
ConnectCluster (999): Failed to open remote cluster 'HOST1.domain.com', status == 1753.

CreateClusterNameCOIfNotExists (6879): Failed to create computer object HVC on DC \\DC.domain.com with OU CN=Computers,DC=domain,DC=com. Error 8224.

I didn't find any solution or anyone talking about these errors,

Some Guys say that i have to install hotfix 976424 from here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2784261

but i cant install it on windows server 2012 its not running.

Your help is appreciated :D

Thanks

SAN Zoning for a Hyper-V Cluster

Best Practice for a FC SAN Zone has always been one Iniator Port and one Target Port per Zone. This insures that communication between the Server and Storage remain "clean" and also makes Troubleshooting easier.

If your lazy and do not feel like making so many Zones, you can also have a Zone with one Iniator Port and multiple Target Ports, if your Storage has multiple Controllers/Ports. Of course, when you have multiple Fabrics, you should not mix the two together.

That being said, I was recently in a MOC Hyper-V + VMM Course and the Instructor said that Microsoft Best Practise for a Hyper-V Cluster is to put one Iniator Port from each Cluster Node (multiple Iniator Ports) with multiple Target Ports all in one Zone. The reason being, he said, was that the Cluster reacted faster in case of a Failover. I have tried to find Microsoft Documentation that Support this statement but have not been able to find any.

Can anyone point me to any Documentation that backs this "Best Practise" Statement up or if you are doing the same thing in your Organisation?

 Thanks in advance!

Dear Support,

I have install NLB feature on two windows 2008 R2 servers both have configured with IIS. However I have tested both are working fine and both are accepting the request successfully.

Since we have performed load test the load balance between the server is not equal

Host 1

CPU Utilization =53%

Host 2

CPU Utilization = 10%

Please suggest.

Cannot connect to Cluster

Three questions, I had two (Primary and Replica) Server 2012 R2 physical hyper-v hosts running VM replication. This was working perfectly...even did a planned and non-planned failover...awesome. I then proceeded to install Failover Clustering, added the two hosts to a cluster, validated them and created the cluster (DAVGeoClusterTest cluster name get's truncated to DAVGeoclusterte), so far so good. IT was end of the day so i stopped right there, basically stopped at the end of the Create Cluster Wizard. A day later i cannot see the cluster in Failover Clustering Manager, I try to connect to it and I get "The RPC Server is Unavailable - Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA" any ideas? Also i can only Remote Desktop into one of the two WMs at a time, the other loses connectivity, is this to avoid the split brain problems? Is there a way to totally undo/delete and go back to my simple VM replication I had going?

WMI Permissions on Cluster Name

We have recently implemented SCOM 2012 with the SQL Management Pack.  On our SQL Clusters (SQL 2008), we have added a low level privilege account to the local administrators group on both nodes and have given read permissions to the databases in SQL (as recommended by Microsoft).   The servers are Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

The issue is, we were receiving a script error on a getSQL2008DBFilesFreeSpace.vbs that the script was terminated because it was running over the 300 second timeout.   Upon further investigation, we have found the real issue.

The low-level privilege account did not have the ability to browse WMI using the Cluster Name.   We were receiving an access denied.   If you logged in as the low-level privilege account locally on one of the SQL Cluster nodes and run wbemtest and then connected to \\<clustername>\root\cimv2, we received an access denied error.   If you connect to \\<clusternodename>\root\cimv2, it would connect successfully.

The low level privilege account is a local administrator of the server and is in the local administrators group.  If you look a the WMI permissions, the local administrators group has full permissions on both the node name and the SQL Cluster name.

To resolve this issue, we had to edit DCOM permissions for the "My Computer" object for Launch and Activation Permissions/Edit Limits and then add the low level priviledge account explicitly with Remote Activation permissions.

My question.....why do you have to add EXPLICIT permissions for an account in DCOM when the account is already a member of local administrators group that HAS the remote activation permission defined????

I appreciate it if any one can tell me if there is a patch or something that I am missing that corrects this condition.  I think it is silly that I have to add this account explicitly if it is already a member of a group that has the permissions defined?

Thanks!

Understanding Quorum Disk

We've got a simple 3-node Hyper-V cluster setup which initially passed the verify tool 100%.  We created it, added the drives from the SAN, everything works great (including planned/unplanned fail-overs) BUT.... when we now re-verify the cluster we get a quorum warning.

I understand that we can designate one of the disks on the SAN as a quorum disk, and if we do that warning goes away, but if we do that does that mean we cannot use that disk for actual storage of VMs?

SQL Server Instance is not coming online on windows 2008 R2 cluster

Hi,

We have implemented a two node Windows fail-over cluster on which SQL server instance has been installed. As part of Fail-over testing, we have disabled network adapter in first node (preferred owner) and the SQL instance moved to the second node without any issue. But when we tried to enable network adapter and move back the SQL instance to first node it fails. The status is like Online Pending for sometime and will become Failed. We are getting Cluster event logs error like 1069 and 1205. We tried to check with all possible solutions in the internet referring to this event ID (1069 and 1205) with no luck.

We also tried the solution for this issue "SQL Server cluster resource goes to a "failed" state when you try to bring the resource online in SQL Server" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883732 provided in Microsoft support page too by checking registry resource parameters and could not find any missing parameter in the registry side also.

So can anyone help us regarding this issue?

Regards,

Kiran
