Creating 4 Node SQL Cluster

$

Hi

I need to create a 4 Node - SQL 2012 Cluster (all in active Mode).

Node-1 will be having 1 Instance, Node-2 will be having 2 Instance, Node-3 will be running with 1 instance, and Node-4 will be running with 6 SQL Instance.

Let me know whether can I install all the 10 Instance on Node-1 and then can i go ahead and add the  node-2 by selecting 10 Instances which is already installed and then node-3 and node-4.

or Let me know if any other recommended way of Setting up the Cluster.

Add node through RODC

Hello,

I would like to know how to add a node to a Cluster in a DMZ environment through a RODC?

I create my cluster with 2 nodes without problem, but now, we added a new physical server and I would like to add it.

I try with the Add Node option and with Add-ClusterNode, but I have a timeout everytime.

For information, all Hyper-V servers are running Windows Server 2012.

Thank you for your help.

File Share Witness is not a valid File share path

$

I have two Windows 2008 R2 VMs (ESXi) running Double-Take.

We currently have a Health-check running on our Netscaler to force a failover from the primary VM to the secondary VM if the Netscaler cannot access the an SMB share on the Primary VM.

This hasn't proven to be a good method of providing Fault Tolerance, so I am trying to cluster these two VMs using a File Share Witness.

(I should add that my client engineers this solution, I only implement according to their requirements).

The Witness share has been created on an EMC VNX. My domain account and the domain Cluster Computer Name account both have Full Control permissions on the Share.

I have installed the File Services Role as well as the Failover Clustering Feature on both VMs.

To configure the Quorum, I am selecting Node and File Share Majority (For Clusters with special configuration).

I am providing the IP address and share name in the form of \\<ipaddress>\<sharename>.

The wizard returns \\<ipaddress>\<sharename> is not a valid share path.

Reading the documentation from Microsoft, there is a statement saying that the witness share should have nothing else stored or using that share.  Within the shared folder is an .etc folder with Everyone, Unix UID=0x0, and Unix GID=0x0.  All three accounts have 'special' permissions, Traverse, List, Read. I am unable to delete this folder (haven't tried to take ownership) because I don't know what the impact could be.

Is it possible that this folder is preventing the share from becoming a Witness Share?

Any other thoughts, ideas?

The client did test this in their lab, but used a file share on another Windows server rather than a NAS.

Server 2012 cluster - virtual machine live migration does not work

Hi,

We have a hyper-v cluster with two nodes running Windows Server 2012. All the configurations are identical.

When I try to make a Live migration from one node to the other I get an error message saying:

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine XXXXXX' failed.

I get no other error messages, not even in event viewer. This same happens with all of our virtual machines.

A normal Quick migration works just fine for all of the virtual machines, so network configuration should not be an issue.

The above error message does not provide much information.

Cluster network name resource error 1196

I have a two-node Hyper-V 2012 Core Server cluster. Initially, the cluster was working fine and I was able to do live migrations with no problem. I first realized that something had gone wrong when I was attempting to move a VM's storage to the Cluster Disk. When I right click on the VM and select Move > Virtual Machine Storage, the bottom left area of the "move storage" screen says "Loading..." forever and never displays the cluster storage. This happened once before and I was able to correct the issue by taking the Server Name resource offline and doing More Actions > Repair. However, if I try a repair now I receive the following error messages:

"There was an error repairing the active directory object for 'Cluster Name'. Error Code: 0x800713b8. The cluster request is not valid for this object".

I have verified that the cluster name Active Directory object (CCSDCluster) still exists and each node as well as itself has full permissions to the object. What I am not certain of is whether the object is still in the same Organizational Unit as it was originally. After the failed repair attempt, I am able to bring the Server Name resource back online successfully.

In addition, I am continually receiving cluster event errors indicating the following:

"Cluster network name resource 'Cluster Name' failed registration of one or more associated DNS name(s) for the following reason: The handle is invalid. Ensure that the network adapters associated with dependent IP address resources are configured with at least one accessible DNS server."

Each of the two nodes has multiple NICs configured. One for management, one for guest OSs (Hyper-V virtual switch is configured to use this NIC and not allow management OS access), and two for iSCSI (for redundancy and multi-path). Live migration is set to only use the management NICs. The management NIC on both nodes is configured with valid DNS servers. The CCSDCluster DNS entry has full permissions for both nodes and itself.

Any suggestions on what to try would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

NLB afinity in RDS

What type of affinity (none or single type) should i configure for connecting to terminal farm? Is one RDP session represent only one NLB connection? If I'll set no affinity, will my clients successfully connect to the farm?

Importing a fully functional Cluster to SCVMM

Hello,

I'm implementing SCVMM 2012 in my environment but i already have a fully functional Hyper-V Server Core cluster.

When i "import" my cluster on the SCVMM console, it brings the nodes, network etc... but not all the disks and it's not possible to MOVE virtual machine through hosts. (No error messages, it just says "Its not possible to move with actual cluster configurations")

When i ran "SCVMM's Cluster Validation" it results in several bad configurations of Disks and Network, but when i ran it in the Cluster Console is everything OK.

Any ideas?

Windows Server 2008 R2 cluster, MSDTC issue

We recently installed MS Windows Server 2008 R2 EE on two physical IBM System x3550 M4 server and this cluster hosts Biztalk resources on it. MSDTC was configured prior to Biztalk resource were added and after Windows Cluster was setup. Cluster validation reports no issues. But, if we try to import .MSI packages in Biztalk on active node with all the resources on it it goes well, but the next step with installing the .MSI package on another node fails

with the error Log Name: Application
Source: Microsoft-Windows-MSDTC Client 2
Date: 1/21/2014 5:07:58 PM
Event ID: 4104
Task Category: Cluster
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: hostname.company.com
Description:
Failed trying to get the state of the cluster node: MSDTC.The error code returned: 0x80070005

It previously did work well, but the only thing which changed is that on one node CNA adapter was replaced, since it was faulty (i.e. new MAC-address).

Deleting the MSDTC resource didn't resolve the issue as suggested here.

We are considering reinstalling cluster from scratch since this solution should be delivered shortly and we have lack of time for investigation.

Firewalls are disabled. No errors in cluster validation report.

Any suggestions/ideas?

Cluster Shared Volume Offline on Windows server 2012 R2

Hi All,

I keep getting this error on my Windows Server 2012 R2 Cluster: "cluster shared volume is no longer accessible from this cluster node because of error '(1460')". I also get I/O timeout errors as well.

In my Lab, I have 2 Windows Server 2012 R2 Hosts both running the following specs

Server Specs:

Intel Gen3 i7 Processor

64-Gig of Ram

2x Intel I350-T2 (For use with SRIOV and VMQ) --> Latest Drivers installed from Intel

My NAS device is a Synology DS1813+, which supports ODX - Latest Updates applied from Synology

The above error is constantly occurring and is taking my CSV's offline, all VMs are either paused or in a crashed state.

I know their is hotfixes for Windows Server 2012, however the problem seems to persist on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Currently I've disabled VMQ and ODX, and will be monitoring it.

I'm not backing up any VMs i.e. not using VEAM or DPM, since this is a lab environment.

Are their any hotfixes for Windows Server 2012 R2 or any workarounds.

I will also be raising a case with Synology.

Error running unsigned driver inventory and test

$

I’m working a challenge where the cluster validation tool on a Server 2008 R2 SP1 based cluster throws an error running the unsigned driver inventory/validation. It doesn’t say that there are any unsigned drivers but rather says:

An error occurred while executing the test.
There was an error getting information about the unsigned drivers installed on the nodes.
There was an error retrieving information about the Unsigned Drivers from node 'someclusternode.contoso.com'.
Shutting down

If we run the tool from other nodes it will always pass itself and 4 out of the 5 other nodes, but there will be one node that will trigger this. And the node that it fails on is not consistent.

All of the other tests run just fine, and I can’t find anything in any KB that points me in a troubleshooting direction.

Hi,

Recently Risk & Health Assessment done by microsoft -- They suggested us toenable dynamic updates enabled for all necessary DNS record types on the public interface.

Using Static Ip address for both Public & Private NIC.

I could not find this option in the Public Network Card. Kindly help me out where i have enable the dynamic updates.

Windows 2008 R2 Failover cluster failed

$

We have 2 node failover cluster.   When we "tested" failover, all seemingly went well.  Service failed across and all drives with the exception of the Quorum failed across (did not manually failover the quorum disk).   However, yesterday, our primary node was rebooted and the failover did not work.  However, we were able to manually bring back the primary node and its services except for the the GxClusPlunIn instances.   The only service on this cluster is SQL Server.

It suggests that we run the Validation Test.  However, as I am new to Failover Clustering and did not configure this cluster I want to be sure that running this test will not down the nodes.   If so, I will need to schedule the test during off hours.

Also, it was my understanding from reading many articles that in Windows 2008 the Quorum disk does not failover automatically during the "manual failover test" but should a node fail, the Quorum disk "will" failover automatically.   It seems in our case the Quorum disk did not failover.   Can anyone provide some insight into common causes for this or point me to some documentation that will help me troubleshoot this problem?

2012 R2 Storage Spaces Question

$

I am looking to end up having a tiered SSD/HDD array in a "RAID 10" type of setup. I am wondering if I am going to have to have dual port SAS drives to make my implementation work.

I am looking to have two 2012R2 Storage Spaces servers hooked to one 12 bay JBOD enclosure through SAS. To have these two servers manage this enclosure so I can take 1 server down at a time, am I going to have to have dual port SAS over SATA?

If I do have to go with dual port SAS drives, can I put SATA SSDs in the two servers themselves to act as a Write Back Cache? As I can't afford dual port SAS SSDs for my implementation.

I would like to know how to add a node to a Cluster in a DMZ environment through a RODC?

I create my cluster with 2 nodes without problem, but now, we added a new physical server and I would like to add it.

I try with the Add Node option and with Add-ClusterNode, but I have a timeout everytime.

Failover cluster server - File Server role is clustered - Shadow copies do not seem to travel to other node when failing over

$

Hi,

New to 2012 and implementing a clustered environment for our File Services role.  Have got to a point where I have successfully configured the Shadow copy settings.

Have a large (15tb) disk.  S:

Have a VSS drive (volume shadow copy drive) V:

Have successfully configured through Windows Explorer the Shadow copy settings.

Created dependencies in Failcover Cluster Server console whereby S: depends on V:

However, when I failover the resource and browse the Client Access Point share there are no entries under the "Previous Versions" tab.

When I visit the S: drive in windows explorer and open the Shadow copy dialogue box, there are entries showing the times and dates of the shadow copies ran when on the original node.  So the disk knows about the shadow copies that were ran on the original node but the "previous versions" tab has no entries to display.

This is in a 2012 server (NOT R2 version).

Can anyone explain what might be the reason?  Do I have an "issue" or is this by design?

All help apprecieated!

Event ID 1069 with new File Server role in Windows 2012 Failover Cluster

$

I am struggling with getting a File Server role started in Windows 2012 Failover cluster with two nodes, basically I am just following the instructions in the CBT Nuggets videos, and funny enough the trainer also gets the same 1069 error,

Cluster resource 'fs1' of type 'Network Name' in clustered role 'fs1' failed.

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

One node is a DC, the other is a member server. I have tried moving the role to the other server but no dice. I have attached the cluster.log file if anyone has any ideas.

Who holds roles when cluster nodes communication is interrupted ?

$

Hi All,

This is a basic question, i always thought it's a one, but only today, i encountered a situation where i was unable to figure out the result.

Suppose that:

- We have a two nodes failover cluster (Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V cluster)

- VMs are spreaded between both nodes

- The quorum model is 'Disk and node majority' and the witness disk is owned now by the second node (Node 1), the CNO too

The situation:

- All the Node 1 NICs fail, the Node 1 is unable to communicate with any network (Storage is FC, not concerned by the network)

- Node 2 is normal

The question:

What is supposed to happen now ?

what is the process, who will get roles... ?

Thanks a lot !
