VM in Cluster stuck at Stopping

$

Hello,

I currently have the problem with our in house cluster that on VM is stuck in the Stopping state. (see Image)

It seems that the Cluster tries to Shut down the VM, but cannot contact it as in the details section there is no CPU usage or other data displayed.

If I try to remove it i get the error: "A null context handle was passed from the client to the host during a remote procedure call." (0x800706ef)

We now started the VM on another Hyper-V Host, as the machine is used in our working environment.

Hope someone can help me resolve this issue.

Thanks Paul

Failed fail-over when pulling network cable

Hello

Setup:

2-node cluster with physical servers. 3 network teams, 1 Heartbeat, 1 LAN and 1 SAN. Its the Windows Server 2012 Team SW thats been used.

Problem:

All fail-over tests work fine, except "pulling the network cable" on the LAN-network. By pulling the cable I mean disabling the NICs that creates the LAN-team. That triggers the fail-over from that server, but the IP-address in the cluster fails with following error messages: "

The Cluster service failed to bring clustered service or application 'Cluster Group' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service or application"

"Cluster resource 'Cluster IP Address' of type 'IP Address' in clustered role 'Cluster Group' failed."

I tried finding relevant information online, but nothing seems to clearly solve the issue. The Cluster Validation completes without any errors at all. The cluster can be brough online manually, but not by itself.

Are there any views on how the cluster is supposed to handle sudden network losses? Any suggestions?

Regards

Alex

Cluster network name resource failed registration (Event ID 1196)

I recently implemented Cluster Aware Updating on my Windows 2012 cluster.  During the setup of the role I selected the option to "Add the CAU clustered role with self-updating mode enabled, to this cluster."  The wizzard created a computer object "CAUHyper4gf" in AD for this role.  Since that time, roughly every 15 mintues Event ID 1196 with the following error is logged:

"Cluster network name resource 'CAUHyper4gf' failed registration of one or more associated DNS name(s) for the following reason:
This operation returned because the timeout period expired.
.

Ensure that the network adapters associated with dependent IP address resources are configured with at least one accessible DNS server."

The Computer Object is listed in DNS and responds to pings.  I haven't been able to find any articles addressing this specific issue.  I'm not sure how to correct this issue.  What can be done to eliminate these errors?

VMs Fail Randomly on 2012 Cluster

Our 2-node Server 2012 Hyper-V cluster is having an issue where VMs seem to randomly fail for no apparent reason.  We are using Dell R900s with a MD3200i SAN and we have separate networks for iSCSI and Heartbeat.  On one of the nodes we get an error 1069 "Cluster Resource 'Virtual Machine VM200X32' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role 'VM200X32' failed."  Below I have listed the relevant cluster log events from around the time it fails.  The cluster has passed validation and is running 50+ test VMs just fine, it's only a few of them that seem to be having this issue.

Just wondering if anyone else might have some input on what the problem could be.

Windows 2012 Nodes - Slow CSV Performance - Need help to resolve my iSCSI issue configuration

$

I spent weeks going over the forums and the net for any publications and advice on how to optimize iSCSI connections and i'm about to give up.  I really need some help in determining if its something i'm not configuring right or maybe its an equipment issue.

Hardware:

2x Windows 2012 Hosts with 10 Nics (same NIC configuration) in a Failover Cluster sharing a CSV LUN.

  • 3x NICs Teamed for Host/Live Migration (192.168.0.x)
  • 2x NICS teamed for Hyper-V Switch 1 (192.168.0.x)
  • 1x NIC teamed for Hyper-V Switch 2 (192.168.10.x)
  • 4x NICs for iSCSI traffic (192.168.0.x, 192.168.10.x, 192.168.20.x 192.168.30.x)
  • Jumbo frames and flow control turned on all the NICs on the host.  IpV6 disabled.  Client for Microsoft Network, File/Printing Sharing Disabled on iSCSI NICs.
  • MPIO Least Queue selected.  Round Robin gives me an error message saying "The parameter is incorrect.  The round robin policy attempts to evenly distribute incoming requests to all processing paths. "

Netgear ReadyNas 3200

  • 4x NICs for iSCSI traffic ((192.168.0.x, 192.168.10.x, 192.168.20.x 192.168.30.x)

Network Hardware:

  • Cisco 2960S managed switch - Flow control on, Spanning Tree on, Jumbo Frames at 9k - this is for the .0 subnet
  • Netgear unmanaged switch - Flow control on, Jumbo Frames at 9k - this is for .10 subnet
  • Netgear unmanaged switch - Flow control on, Jumbo Frames at 9k - this is for .20 subnet
  • Netgear unmanaged switch - Flow control on, Jumbo Frames at 9k - this is for .30 subnet

Host Configuration (things I tried turning on and off):

  • Autotuning
  • RSS
  • Chimney Offload

I have 8 VMs stored in the CSV.  When try to load all 8 up at the same time, they bog down.  Each VM loads very slowly and when they eventually come up, most of the important services did not start.  I have to load them up 1 or 2 at a time.  Even then the performance is nothing like if they were loading up on the Host itself (VHD stored on the host's hdd).  This is what prompted me to add in more iSCSI connections to see if I can improve the VM's performance.  Even with 4 iSCSI connections, I feel nothing has changed.  The VMs still start up slowly and services do not load right.  If I distribute the load with 4 VMs on Host 1 and 4 VMs on Host 2, the load up times do not change.

As a manual test for file copy speed, I moved the cluster resources to Host 1 and copied a VM from the CSV and onto the Host.   The speed would start out around 250megs/sec and then eventually drop down to about 50/60 megs/sec.  If I turn off all iSCSI connections except one, it get the same speed.  I can verify from the Windows Performance Tab under Task Manager that all the NICS are distributing traffic evenly, but something is just limiting the flow.  Like what I stated on top, I played around with autotuning, RSS and chimney offload and none of it makes a difference.

The VMs have been converted to VHDx and to fixed size.  That did not help.

Is there something I'm not doing right?   I am working with Netgear support and they are puzzled as well.  The ReadyNas device should easily be able to handle it.

Please help!  I pulled my hair out over this for the past two months and I'm about to give up and just ditch clustering all together and just run the VMs off the hosts themselves.

Fail Over Clustering disk issue in 2012

I've launched the ISCSI Initiator from both computers, and connected them to the target.  The two ISCSI disks show up in disk management.  On one computer, I initialized/brought online both disks, and formatted them with NTFS.

Next step was to create the failover cluster, but I can't make the disks appear in the cluster.  I've tried it with the disks online, with the disks offline, with no drive letters on the disks - no dice.

After the cluster is created, the disks don't appear in the Failover Cluster Manager Storage -> Disks area, and if I click the Add Disk link, I get the dreaded "No suitable disks for cluster disks were found" message.  Yet, the disks that were configured in Disk Management are not visible from either node.  They also aren't visible in the Server Manager -> File and Storage Services -> ISCSI area.  They are entirely missing in action.  No good recreating them in that tool either; it says, "No eligible servers are available".

What am I not doing that is preventing the ISCSI disks from being available to the Failover Cluster?

I did many times , but i was not able to see the disk or add disk from cluster. Please provide me solution

I have configured multiple client machine IP address and Port number in Database. whenever I want to send the data from server to client  that time server reading IP and Port number from database and sending message through TCP Client.

Now the problem is my client machine IP and port already i configured but now my client machine working in WAN or ethernet, in this scenario my client machine IP will be different because of this sub-net has been changed.

TcpClient socketForServer = new TcpClient("192.168.2.54", 12345);

Acutally this is the configured IP and port number to connect my client but the problem is now my client machine connected with DHCP IP so it will not connect. That IP is 192.168.5.54

Anyone please help me how to connect my client machine from server through TCP listener or TCP client in C#

We have two physical servers in FCI and third server in different datacenter for DR with SQL Always On Configuredwhich is VM running same version of windows, we are getting the below alert

Node 'N1' which is physical established a communication session with node 'N3' which is VM and detected that it is running a different but compatible version of the cluster service software. It is recommended that the same version of the cluster service software be installed on all nodes in the cluster.

Can we ignore this safely?

Windows Storage Server 2012 Failover Cluster with NFS Resource

Hi,

(I'm not at work at the moment so I'm attempting to write this from memory). As stated in the title, I have a 2012 Cluster with the NFS resource added to my File Server role, however, upon fail over, the resource fails to start stating that the group / resource isn't in a valid state? and I have to kill the multiple "Server for NFS" tasks that start, restart the service and try again.. this can take a few attempts before it eventually comes on-line.

Is there anything I can check that may be causing the issue?

Also, I'm not sure if this should be posted as a separate question but we're having issues with files being copied from Unix to the NFS share in the 2012 cluster. We have a feeling it's down to the file names as they contain colon's. I've tried to use character translation but it doesn't appear to be working, does anyone have any have any examples of how character translation should be configured?

Thanks in advance,

Mark.

Cluster-Aware Updating Readiness "Errors"

I have a two-node Windows Server 2012 failover cluster.  The Windows firewall is disabled on both nodes.

When I log on to one of the nodes (bcs-vmhyperv2), and run the Cluster-Aware Updating tool to analyze the cluster readiness, I receive this result:

When I log on to the other node and run the tool, I received the same two errors.  The problem computer is always the local computer.

I know that PowerShell remoting and WINRM are enabled!  So, the "resolution" steps don't help.

Here's proof:

If I log on to a different Windows Server 2012 system (not one of the cluster nodes), and run the tool, I receive no errors:

In fact, I setup CAU and used it to apply the latest set of Windows Updates from the third computer.

Why can't I use it from the cluster nodes?  How do I fix it?

"Access denied/incorrect function" on CSV from hyper-v clustered Windows Server 2012 nodes

Hello,

I am running into a problem with CSV access on a 2 nodes Hyper-V cluster (WS2012). We are in the process of upraging the 2008R2 2 nodes cluster already in production and fully functionnal for the last 3 years.

Here are the new specs : 2 HP DL380p G8 Windows Server 2012 Datacenter (HP ROK installation) connected via iSCSI (MPIO) to the same Netapp FAS2020 (Ontap 7.3.3). 2 LUNs (980 GB each) : one for CSV1 and the other for CSV2. A LUN for the quorum. A basic design. Windows LBFO NIC teaming, dedicated NICs : LAN, CSV/heartbeat, LiveMigration, VM LAN... A design fully functionnal for several years at dozen of customers.

On the new WS2012, everything is validated OK in the cluster validation process. I can create the cluster as expected. The disks are added correctly. I can dynamically change the owner and coordinator node without problem. Well, everything works fine unless I add the disks to the Cluster shared volume. I can correctly switch the CSV owner though. I got a c:\cluster\volume1, as expected...

But, if I tried to access inside c:\cluster\volume1 (logged as domain admin, of course) from the node owner, I get "access denied". If I tried to acces the same CSV from the non owner node, I get "incorrect function" error.

I destroyed the cluster several times and recreated it but no luck !

The cluster is functioning without the CSV feature activated !?! But it is not an option.

I really need a helping hand on that.

Volume Guid and Powershell

$

Hi,

As we are using Hyper-V clustering and rapid SAN provisioning it makes sense to attach VHDs using volume GUIDs such as

"\\?\Volume{3e199f9f-5c93-11e3-8130-d4ae5201ad09}\\Vm1Disk1.vhd"

I can attach the disk using powershell and WMI but not using the new "New-VHD" method.

In fact I am unable to use volume GUIDs at all in any file related functions as it doesn't like the "?" character I think which is technically an invalid character in a filename.

Is there any secret way of escaping a volume guid so that powershell can accept it.

Thanks

Daniel

W2K8 SP2, 2 nodes, while validating the nodes for cluster creation everything is OK except for "List Services Information" which fails. The error that I get in the report is:

An error occurred while executing the test. There was an error getting information about the running services on the nodes. There was an error retrieving information about the Services from node 'FQDN'. Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I have been looking seems like everywhere, but cannot find anything relevant.

Any ideas suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi,

we migrated VMs from Server 2012 to 2012R2 with VMM 2012R2, now we got every Machine migrated this way shown twice in the Failovercluster Manager like you see in the Picture below.(In Hyper-V Manager everything Looks fine).

When I try to delete the Machine I get the Error: "A remote procedure call (RPC) protocol error occured". Also when i try to Use Powershell "Remove-ClusterResource" or "Remove-ClusterGroup" the powershell hangs. Did anyone else get this and maybe knows how to fix this? This Problem is really annonying because it causes additional Problems with VMM.

Server 2012 R2 is supposed to have a feature which detects when the public LAN connection used to get into the VM's becomes unavailable, this is supposed to kick in around 60 seconds after it being unavailable. however, I have tried to test this by physically unplugging the network cable, and disabling the network adapter in ncpa.cpl and the virtual machine doesn't seem to live migrate to the other node. the settings for the network adapter in the virtual machine configuration has the "protected network" box checked by default. is there something else we need to check/configure here?

it looks like it tries to migrate but fails, the message in the information details state:

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine Test-TERM' failed.

'Virtual Machine Test-TERM' failed to fixup network settings. Verify VM settings and update them as necessary

Quorom Disk on multiple hosts in Cluster

Good Day Everyone,

I have inherited a Hyper-V cluster and it has some major errors on "Validate Configuration". I am trying to take care of the quorum disk specifically at this point though and I need some clarification. My cluster has 6 hosts with 3 iSCSI volumes mapped to them. 1 volume is Quorum, the other 2 are Cluster Shared Volumes.

I have questions regarding the setup of the volumes that are mapped to the individual Hyper-V hosts.

1. I only see 1 host with the Quorum volume showing as an attached disk. The rest of the servers have the volume mapped but they are not initialized so they do not show up in the OS as a drive/storage. I was under the assumption that all servers in the cluster had to have the Quorum drive at least mapped even if it is configured as "Node Majority". The one server that is the witness does have this drive mapped/initialized.

2. I ran "Configure Cluster Quorum Wizard" but I do not find "Disk witness in Quorum" under storage. I do see the Quorum disk volume but it shows up as Available Storage.

Any help or info would be very helpful.

Antony
