RDP to cluster resource only connects to node holding quorum...

Hi,

I am relatively new to Microsoft Failover Clustering and I have noticed in the past that the microsoft Failover Quorum disk can move independantly between member nodes of the cluster resource

I also notice that when I RDP to the actual cluster name my session will only conenct to the server which is currently hosting teh quorum disk

This is causing problems on a two node cluster where is the quorum moves to the other node which is not hosting the quorum service then the service can no longer be monitored Am i correct in my assumptions here or is there a way to prevent this behaviour?

Many thanks for any help in advance.

Accidentally make clustered disk online on non-clustered server

Hi,

I have Sql failover cluster deployed and recently the second node is corrupted, thus I have removed it from the cluster and reinstalled a fresh windows server. Before i install failover clustering features and add this server into the cluster, I have presented the LUNs (shared disk used by sql cluster) to the fresh new server.

I made a mistake which is to make the disks (LUNs) online at the fresh new server which im not supposed to do so.. So, the fresh server is trying to make that disk online with different drive letter and it causing the disk management failed to connect to virtual disk services and diskpart in cmd also not working.

The current active node in cluster is still working fine as I can see all the disks are online, and I'm able to create database/delete it. So I'm assuming the disks and cluster is ok and does not impact by my mistake.

However, on the fresh server, I can't install any roles and features, and can't use disk management nor diskpart command. If I remove the LUNs from that server using MPIO, the server will back to normal. But if I add back the LUNs into MPIO, issue comes back as the server is still trying to bring up the disk.

I'm running out of idea on how to fix this issue. Hope anyone from technet can help me out.

Set-ClusterLog Powershell Problem

I'm working on my first Hyper-V cluster on Server 2016. Going through the validation, I have a warning about cluster log size less than 1536.  So I search how to increase that and find: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/failoverclusters/set-clusterlog?view=win10-ps

However, when running powershell on the hosts, either as admin or not, and running:

Set-ClusterLog -Size 2048

All I get is:

PS C:\Windows\system32> Set-ClusterLog -Size 2048
Set-ClusterLog : Unable to save property changes for 'HV-Cluster1'.
    The data is invalid
At line:1 char:1
+ Set-ClusterLog -Size 2048
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (:) [Set-ClusterLog], ClusterCmdletException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Set-ClusterLog,Microsoft.FailoverClusters.PowerShell.SetClusterLogCommand

Any ideas why am I unable to set this?

Thank you.

Dear all ,

currently we are trying to create an SQL Cluster on top of Xen Server , the issue we are facing is that the Windows Failover Cluster is not detecting the disk as supported with below error :

"Disk bus type does not support clustering. Disk is on the system bus. Disk partition style is MBR. Disk type is BASIC. The required inquiry data (SCSI page 83h VPD descriptor) was reported as not being supported"

our storage is SAN Storage with Fiber connectivity

hi,
Is there away to mirroring 2 windows server 2012 in real time.

two new windows server (clean nothing install yet) connected in the same IP network, and both joined the the same domain.
I want to make primary server and secondary server.

i want everything happen in the primary server happen in the secondary server.
in real time.

for example, the network admin install DB software in primary server I want the same thing happen in the second server in real time.

the primary server has new Data in the DB i want the same data also inserted the DB in the secondary server in real time .

File share witness: Content of witness.log

Hi,

According to MS documentation, File share witness will only have witness.log vs cluster database (in disk witness):

File share witness
  • SMB file share that is configured on a file server running Windows Server
  • Does not store a copy of the cluster database
  • Maintains cluster information only in a witness.log file
  • Most useful for multisite clusters with replicated storage
  • Must have a minimum of 5 MB of free space
  • Must be dedicated to the single cluster and not used to store user or application data
  • Must have write permissions enabled for the computer object for the cluster name

The following are additional considerations for a file server that hosts the file share witness:
  • A single file server can be configured with file share witnesses for multiple clusters.
  • The file server must be on a site that is separate from the cluster workload. This allows equal opportunity for any cluster site to survive if site-to-site network communication is lost. If the file server is on the same site, that site becomes the primary site, and it is the only site that can reach the file share.
  • The file server can run on a virtual machine if the virtual machine is not hosted on the same cluster that uses the file share witness.
  • For high availability, the file server can be configured on a separate failover cluster.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/failover-clustering/manage-cluster-quorum

I was wondering what is the content of witness.log vs "real" and full cluster database? What info one can get outta it?

Thank you!

Reset password policy of CLIUSR (failover clustering)

$

Dear Sir / Madam,

CLIUSR is automatically created and managed by failover clustering. I learnt that the password of CLIUSR is reset according to the maximum machine account password age which is default to 30 days. I have verified in local security policy (and group policy) that this value has been set to 30 days. However, i noticed that the passworf of CLIUSR is reset every 22 days instead of 30 days.

i would like to know if there are other parameters controlled the password reset period of CLIUSR. Are there any processes triggered to reset the CLIUSR's password? Thanks.

Fail-over Cluster Manager Service Disk Offline

Hello Tech-net Forum Team.

Hope you are doing well.!

I would seek your you kind advise and finding for an issues which i cam across related to Windows Fail over cluster manger service. I have noticed recently some performance issue and cluster unavailable and fluster service crash issue.
During the trouble shoot process found there is Disk Offline on one cluster node, the cluster shows only one node as owner of the disk. So i suspect the issue when the disk owner node went offline the cluster services affected.

The scenario is below.

Number of Nodes in cluster : 2

OS : Windows Server 2016

Cluster Disk : Disks are presented nodes from NETAPP LUN
Cluster Rols : Virtual Machine

Number of Disk in cluster : 2 [ Quorum Disk & Data Disk - for Virtual machine ]

I would le to clarify on below ?

* Is it mandatory to have both nodes owner of the disk, or one node enough ?

* If its required two node as owner, how can i bring the disk online the second node [ pic attached with current error - ]

* One of Role VM in cluster shows always the live migration failed, can we stop live migration pending tasks ?

I would be gratefulon your kind support. Thank you.

Windows Clustered Shared Volume IOPS

Quick question. I'm reviewing the IOPS for my CSV, and im confused about the "Cluster CSVFS\Reads/sec" counter. I aligned "Physical Disk\Disk Reads/sec" (for the CSV disk) with "Cluster CSV File System\IO Reads/sec" and "Cluster CSVFS\Reads/sec". The first two align (shows roughly the same value), but "Cluster CSVFS\Reads/sec" is way off the chart. Which is the real number? My assumption is that the "Cluster CSVFS\Reads/sec" value is inaccurate, or does not reflect disk IO (aka IOPS).

WinServer2019 RDS Cluster Setup

We currently have a pair of Windows Server 2016 servers in a cluster and are looking to set up a new pair of servers with Windows Server 2019. Once the 2019 servers are setup in high availability cluster line the 2016 servers we will migrate the VMs over.

Problem here is that my notes and sample web sites on how to set up an RDS HA cluster are missing. And when I search the web for this info I can find a plethora of information on how to simply set up a single RDS server but not much on how to set up HA/Cluster.

Can anyone point me in a direction to install this setup? I'll even take the 2016 version as I don't imaging it's all that different.

Windows 2008 R2 Server and domain fail

Hi,

I have at the time a windows 2008 R2 server domain that holds all FSMOs rules.I do everyday a full backup of my DC holds all FSMOs.I have 3 DCs too with windows 2019 server

My question:

1) If my DC machine hardware is damaged or fails, can I restore my DC with my full backup  from for example yesterday on a new hardware machine?

But how is it with synchronization ? because the backup is from yesterday or before some hours? Is it working so?

What should I do after restoring the DC backup on the new machine?

Hi.

I have some issue of Failover Cluster with Hyper-V.

I was disconnect and connect to LAN cable for migration test at multiple node.

I expect result like below

* Disconnect LAN cable : Failed status with migration VM

* Connect LAN cable : Up status

Almost get result expected but, randomly has get failed to recovery NIC status.

It was changed status when disconnected LAN cable, and it doesn't change status when connect LAN cable.

(But, communication ok, and ping and so on... )

here is example picture...

What can I do for this?

Please somebody help me.

OS : Windows Server 2019

Network Interface : Intel I350

Virtual NIC : Private and Public (teaming each NIC)

We have four Node Windows 2016 Data Center 2016 Hyper-V Cluster and activated with Datacenter Product key.

I have question about Licensing about VMs hosted on this Cluster.

We have different OS VMs Hosted like Windows 2016 , 2019 , 2008 R2 , Windows 10 Pro on Cluster.

Do We need to buy separate License for each of VMs Operating system hosted on it or any other step we need to do it as we have DataCenter Licesne.

appreciate for your help.

High Availability

So I have been tasked out to plan a project on creating a high availability print cluster using 3 physical servers at 3 locations. After days of research I thought I had a good "how-to" on how to step by step achieve this. Came to find out, our printers run off of VMware. Regardless if you're using Hyper-V or VMware, does the set up and step by step how-to's work on both? Or specifically to hyper-v? If so, do you have any resources on how we can create a high availability print cluster for VMware?

Server 2016 with two nodes + failover cluster manager

Hi All,

Hoping someone can assist. We've got two physical servers running 2016 running running a failover cluster manager environment. Each server has the following hard disks installed.

6 x 600GB 15k SAS on storage controller 1

2 x 600GB 15k SAS (mirrored as used by host OS) on storage controller 2

4 x 960GB SSDs on storage controller 2

We've got one storage pool presented to failover cluster manager and then running two CSV's. One of the CSVs was running out of space therefore we decided to install an additional 2 x 960SSDs on each server to provision more space.

When we check the storage pool I can see it says 2.18TB of free space. When I go to extend the CSV's with the assumption I've got 2.18TB of free space, I cannot increase the size of the CSV by that amount - at the moment the only amount I can extend it by is 50GB which is not making a lot of sense to me. Why? I've already optimized the storage pool with little effect. I've also rescanned the the storage pool again with little effect.

Please see below some outputs:
